Turkish Airlines

Turkish Airlines, Turkey's national flag carrier, was founded in Ankara on May 20th, 1933 as the "State Airlines Administration" under the direction of the Ministry of Defence. In 1956, it was restructured, becoming "Turkish Airlines". In 2005, 25% of the company was sold via an SPO under a privatisation programme, and today 50.9% of the company shares are publicly held, while the rest remain state-owned. In 2012, Turkish Airlines' network includes nearly 235 international and domestic destinations with more to come.

Turkish Airlines, now Turkey's rising star, began operations with just 5 airplanes. Today the fleet numbers 200 (188 + 12 Wet Lease) aircraft and is the youngest in Europe, providing our passengers with modern, efficient aircraft that are also better for the environment.

The company began its current expansion in 2003 and, despite the globally destructive effects of the economic crises, our continued investment is now showing real returns in increasing numbers of passengers, a huge global network and steady profitability.

All of this growth has been matched by significant progress in terms of service quality. Skytrax, the global organization that ranks airline quality, has given Turkish Airlines a host of awards in recent years. These include recognition as Europe’s Best Airline, Southern Europe’s Best Airline, Best Economy Catering as well as garnering recognition for Turkish Airlines’ new Comfort Class seat. The site classifies THY as one of only a handful of 4-star airlines.

Turkish Airlines is the premium partner of Borussia Dortmund since May 2, 2013, and the sponsor of Euroleague Basketball since October 2010.
